Untraditional
Monty Lewis 1982
“Pomfret School is not laden with traditions,” wrote assistant editor Monty Lewis for the October edition of the school paper.
“There is the fun of Pomfretta, but a tradition? Be serious. Maybe we have something against tradition. Maybe our cell structure is such that our body rejects it. Maybe it is something psychological, and we are morally opposed to it. The fact is, though, we have effectively killed off many traditions. The latest fatality of a tradition occurred this fall. The striped uniforms have been the trademark of Pomfret soccer since the team’s inception. We were known as the boys in the stripes for many years. But no longer. This year, the faded stripes have been replaced by fancy new bright red jerseys. Before this light-hearted editorial turns into a sermon, let me make one point: traditions add color and life to this institution. They give a school identity and individuality.”
