Olmsted 1911

The Bull

Frederic Wicks II ’34

William “Bull” Olmsted served as Pomfret’s headmaster from 1897 until his death in 1929, making him the longest serving headmaster in Pomfret history. During his 32 years, he presided over the acquisition and creation of no fewer than a dozen landmark buildings, as well as hundreds of acres of land.

“In the last years of Mr. O’s life, illness prevented him from riding herd in the vigorous manner for which he, The Bull, was so well known. This nickname is forever enshrined as a part of the Pomfret scene in the chapel. The bust of a bull is sculpted in stone over the chair where he sat by the choir on the organ side.”
