Pass the Gravy

John R. Searles Jr. 1930

The boys who lived in the cubicles wrote home for the makings of Thanksgiving dinner, including turkey, dressing, cranberry sauce, and pumpkin pies. It was a strange and, I’m sure, unsanitary practice. Our bureaus were placed in the entrances of the cubicles to form counters to serve the various elements of this Thanksgiving feast. The rest of the school, including parents, masters, wives, and friends were invited to this glorious but messy buffet. The cleanup was a challenge equal to the Augean stables. The feast was abandoned my fourth form year.
