Getting Here
P. Blair Lee ’14
The boys, numbering about 140, came principally from the New York area, with a number from New England and a scattering from Baltimore-Washington and the far West.
The majority reached Pomfret by train. The New Haven line had excellent passenger service, and Pomfret was on the Airline branch, with two daily express trains each way between New York and Boston. An hour and a half for the Boston boys and four and a half for the New York group, generally by Pullman car equipped with a broiler buffet, and we were there, ready for the sobering and sometimes frigid trip up the hill in horse-drawn barges.
There were six forms, and the three upper forms were assigned specific dorms, with the little boys in alcoves in Upper Pontefract and Upper Plant. The maids cleaned the dorms and made the beds every day.
