Cover Girl

Mike Chambers 1951

In our fifth form year, [our English teacher, Bob Brawley] ordered us a fictionalized account of Helen of Troy — in paperback. The cover was apparently designed to appeal to newsstand customers. The amount of cleavage displayed was too much for Bob, who scissored off every cover before distributing copies, much to our chagrin. I can only think that we might have done our reading with a little more enthusiasm, perhaps searching for nugget of promised excitement, had he not been so delicate in his sensibilities.
