I was a student at Pomfret when zip codes were just being created. It was a real novelty. In the early days they had two digit “postal zones” that denoted certain parts of the city. The five digit number was introduced in 1963. They became mandatory in 1967.
Back in the 60s, the post office was in the basement of the school building, and everyone had their own box. The postmaster in those days was a fellow named Rufus. I remember sitting in School Meeting as Rufus stood there, forcing everyone in attendance to recite the zip code over and over again. I’ll never forget it.
